OPENING CONFERENCE SESSION
IGNITE!
The 84th Annual ACHE Conference is going to start with high energy and fun. The opening conference session will be an Ignite session that conference attendees will talk about the rest of the year.
 The Ignite session will be rapid learning by a variety of presenters. Each presenter will be given a set number of slides and a short period of time to present the slides. The presenters will focus on what they have learned the past two years and will conclude with where they see the industry going in the next couple of years.
Please grab your coffee get ready for some music and be prepared to cheer on the best presenter. There will be audience participation and we will crown the Ignite session winner in a traditional New Orleans way.

Ignite Session Presenters
Amrit Ahluwalia | Editor in Chief, The EvoLLLution: A Modern Campus Illumination
Amrit Ahluwalia is the Editor in Chief of The EvoLLLution, an online newspaper focused on non-traditional higher education and the transforming postsecondary marketplace. He also serves as Director of Strategic Insights for Modern Campus. Ahluwalia was part of the team that conceived of and launched The EvoLLLution in 2011, and served as its Managing Editor from 2011-2021.
Ahluwalia works personally with every contributor at The EvoLLLution to produce the content that has supported the site’s rise to becoming the top resource for non-traditional higher education.
Ahluwalia earned his BA (Honors) in Political Studies from Queen’s University and his MA in International Politics from McMaster University.
Ahluwalia loves to cook and travel. He lives in London, ON with his wife.
Dr. Brian Van Horn | President | Mayville State University
Dr. Brian Van Horn became the president of Mayville State University on July 1, 2018. He brings more than 20 years of experience in leadership roles within institutions of higher education. He most recently served as the associate provost and dean at Murray State University, Murray, KY.
As a leader, Dr. Van Horn has a keen focus on student needs as a priority, with particular attention on access to education, growing academic programs and services, and strong town and gown community partnerships. Coming from a rural background, he understands the challenges faced in meeting critical workforce needs. He’s “Comet Proud” to lead the growth and transformation of Mayville State while remaining true to the school’s motto which serves as the foundation for all that happens at Mayville State University, “The School of Personal Service.”
A native of Benton, Ill., Van Horn graduated from Benton Consolidated High School before beginning college at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. He played baseball there, and after attending SIUC for two years, he transferred to Murray State University, which set the direction for his work in life. He holds two degrees from Murray State, a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Public Administration. He earned a doctorate degree in leadership and policy studies from the University of Memphis.
Dr. Amy Johnson | Associate Vice Provost for Faculty and Director of the Center for Teaching Excellence | East Tennessee State University
Dr. Amy Johnson has more than 20 years of experience in continuing higher education, adult degree programming, teaching and faculty development, and first-year experience courses.
Currently, she serves as the Associate Provost for Faculty & Director of East Tennessee State University’s Center for Teaching Excellence. Her scholarship has focused on the science of student learning as well as success factors for adult and non-traditional students. She is currently serving as Past-President for the Association of Continuing Higher Education. Dr. Johnson earned her B.A. from the College of William and Mary in Virginia and a M.A. and Ed.D. from East Tennessee State University.
As a person, Amy also values spending time with her son and husband. She enjoys a good campfire that is surrounded by good conversation, a few guitars, and lots of singing voices. She is a big fan of Americana and Folk music, low brow novels, true crime podcasts, and almost all HBO series.
Nicholas Emerita | Chief of Staff and Senior Vice President of Strategy | University of Maryland
Prior to joining the University of Maryland, Nicholas Eremita was Vice President for Enterprise Planning and Strategic Enablement at SNHU, driving strategy development, business process transformation, and program management across the institution. He served as executive leader of a 300-person team that drove transformational change across every facet of the university, while also developing and leading the first centralized corporate planning and strategy execution process for SNHU. 
Prior to SNHU, Eremita served as deputy director of strategy and concepts—and earlier as the branch chief of global force management—for the U.S. Department of Defense and Joint Staff, where he advised and worked closely with Gen. James N. Mattis, Gen. John Allen, and Lt. Gen. H. R. McMaster, and led, formulated and advanced the long-term strategic concepts for the U.S. Army that will drive, streamline and optimize future capabilities for the next generation. 
As a program manager at Booz Allen Hamilton, he advised the Defense Department on enterprise architecture and systems engineering challenges, testing proofs of concept and driving analytics-based decision models. 
  
A veteran of the U.S. Army, Eremita earned a BS in mechanical engineering from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and an MS in resource strategy from The Eisenhower School of National Security & Resource Strategy in Washington, D.C.
