Five Minutes with ACHE

    Are you looking for a way to contribute to the New Orleans community while you are attending the ACHE conference this year? If so, we have an opportunity that will allow you to make a difference for children and families in the greater New Orleans area!

    For this year’s Annual Conference & Meeting, ACHE has formed a relationship with the New Orleans Kids Partnership (NOKP), an organization committed to “expanding access to high quality services for children, youth, and families in Greater New Orleans.” One of the goals of NOKP is to provide free or low-cost professional development opportunities for professionals in nonprofit organizations who serve children and families in the city.

    To help them accomplish their goal, we will offer free participation in select segments of the conference program to NOKP professionals. Additionally, we plan to host a school supply drive for some of NOKP’s partner organizations. When you are packing for New Orleans, please plan to include some school supplies to help fill a bus for the children of the Crescent City. If you can’t sacrifice shoe room for school supplies, there will be locations near the Hotel Monteleone where you can buy supplies for the drive as well.

    Emory Continuing Education (ECE) enrolls thousands of students from the Atlanta community and beyond. In the last few years, ECE created a new Business Development team and quickly increased sales in the corporate sphere.

    Following a strategic business model to further align the existing Jenzabar Higher Reach student database, ECE implemented Jenzabar Higher Reach CRM, a constituent relationship management system to support marketing and sales efforts. By automating workflows, sharing data, and providing greater insight into each opportunity, the CRM helps build relationships and personalize communications with students, prospective students, and corporate contacts.

    Katharine Foster, Director of Continuing Education Administration and Operations, says, “The CRM has made a huge difference. We are using the CRM daily and always monitoring the pipeline. Before having a system for tracking, everything was just verbal communication; now all the emails and phone conversations are in the CRM where we can see the stages of each.”

    The CRM helped the team increase its corporate enrollments through better networking in the community. The team has now built trust for new clients to come to them and created a pipeline that will keep them on track to meet all their goals well into the future.

    Our 78th Annual Conference and Meeting in New Orleans will be here in only four short weeks. The Conference Planning Committee has been working hard all year to plan an annual meeting that will celebrate our collaborative successes, and provide strategic connections and great networking opportunities. We are excited to see names both familiar and new among the registrations. Don’t forget the deadline for booking hotel reservations with the ACHE discount is Sunday, September 25. After September 25, rooms will raise to $219 if booked online and $229 if booked on the phone. If you have not already done so please book your room now!

    To provide you with more time to share with your colleagues the depth and breadth of the conference concurrent sessions and workshops, we have extended our registration deadline by one week to October 3rd. Keep checking ACHE’s Facebook page or our LinkedIn Group page for updates.

    As we begin our countdown to meeting in New Orleans, I want to recognize and express my sincere appreciation to conference co-chairs Amy Johnson and TinaMarie Coolidge and to the entire conference planning committee for their dedication and commitment to the success of your 2016 conference. I would like to give a special mention and a big thank you to Lisa Graves and to Louisiana State University for taking on the enormous task of heading up the local arrangements committee. Additionally, it would be remiss of me if I did not recognize the hard work and support of the ACHE Home Office: Dr. Jim Pappas, Rebekah Law, and through July of this year, Ynez, they have worked so hard behind the scenes to provide outstanding support to the conference planning committee and me.

    In New Orleans I will hand the presidential gavel over to President Elect Clare Roby, but before I do this I want to take a moment to thank each and every one of you for what you do for our profession and for our adult and non-traditional students in higher education. As part of my presidential duties, I travelled throughout the spring, attending our regional meetings, where I got to meet so many of you and learn first-hand the impact you are making across our regions for our communities, our students, and our campuses.

    It has been an honor and privilege to serve as president of ACHE this year, and to represent the association among peer associations. Thank you for all that you do and for welcoming me so warmly. Please join me in New Orleans for an outstanding Annual Conference and Meeting.

Like most years, recipients of the ACHE scholarships and awards for 2016 are some of the best and brightest minds in our field.     The Leadership Award is the highest award presented by ACHE and recognizes an individual who has made extraordinary contributions in leadership, theory, and practice in continuing higher education.

    The Meritorious Service Award recognizes individuals for their outstanding leadership, performance, and service to continuing higher education at their own institution and within the Association.

    This award provides recognition to Association members upon their official retirements from their major continuing education roles at their institutions.

    Rising Star Award

    The Rising Star award recognizes an individual new to continuing education who has either developed or extended an outstanding program or division within a CE unit, or conducted research or published on a top that has enhanced or advanced the field.     New Orleans is a city of music, art, entertainment, and good times. While we anxiously wait for the ACHE 2016 Conference & Meeting, why don’t you plan to round out your trip with some cultural festivities? Whether you’re planning on staying just for the conference, or have already made plans to spend an extra day or two in NOLA, there are plenty of things to do in New Orleans this October!

    October 14-16 – Crescent City Blues & BBQ Festival

    Take advantage of the cool weather while enjoying live music and authentic New Orleans BBQ at the 11th annual Crescent City Blues & BBQ festival. Taj Mahal, Jon Cleary & the Absolute Monster Gentleman, The Suffers, Tab Benoit, and Nikki will headline the event this year.

    The festival will take place in Lafayette Square Park, where various food and craft vendors will line the park alongside 24 of the best local handcraft and home furnishing artists. Admission is free and open to the public. No outside food and drink are permitted.

    October 12-20 – New Orleans Film Festival

    The annual New Orleans Film Festival is an Oscar-qualifying event that has become one of the nation’s top-ranked film festivals, attracting thousands of producers, directors, writers, actors, and actresses each year. The festival is best known for its commitment to discovering new voices in the film industry; according to the festival website, more than 90% of the event lineup comes directly from submissions. The festival is also committed to spotlighting work by diverse of filmmaking voices, promoting inclusivity, and promoting many different types of stories.

    In addition to esteemed film screenings that allow new and established filmmakers to premiere their latest works, the festival also presents a series of mentor sessions, workshops, and panel discussions featuring industry leaders. Opportunities for guests to connect with industry professionals, meet with companies like Paramount, The Weinstein Company, FilmBuff, and the Orchard, as well as funders and broadcasters are a major draw of the event. Cinema fans, established filmmakers, and aspiring professionals alike can delight this unique creative outlet in a city well known for letting the good times roll.

    October 21-22 – Oktoberfest

    Enjoy a piece of Germany at Oktoberfest in the Rivertown section of Kenner. Live traditional music, traditional German folk dancing, beer, authentic German cuisine, German wines and liquors, and an Oktoberfest parade will all be cause to celebrate at the Deutsches Haus in New Orleans!

    Attracting up to 15,000 visitors every year, Oktoberfest in New Orleans includes a courtyard and Biergarten from which to enjoy live music from German bands. Many traditional dances include knee-slapping, twisting, and chanting.

    October 22 – Krewe of Boo Halloween Parade

    Participate in the official Halloween Parade of New Orleans by attending the annual Krewe of Boo Halloween Parade. Featuring 3-dimensional fiberglass and papier mache floats constructed by Kern Studios, the parade frightens and excites the crowd it draws.

    Parade riders will throw various items to onlookers as they pass by, including candy, chee wees, pralinettes, light-up medallion beads, voodoo doll pins and magnets, doubloons, and children’s toys. Krewe of Boo also accepts new members for each year’s event, so you can even ride in the parade yourself! Visit their membership page to register.

    Where: The parade will begin at Elysian Fields in the Marigny and progress through the French Quarter

    Each year, ACHE holds a fundraising drive as a part of the Annual Conference to raise money for grants and scholarships. All of the proceeds go toward supporting the educational needs of graduate students studying in adult and continuing higher education. Donate today and help us reach our goal of $3,500 to help empower the best and brightest students to spearhead a positive future for our field.

    Each tax-deductible $5 donation will earn the donor one entry into a drawing for a $500 gift card. The winner of the gift card will be will announced during the 2016 Annual Conference & Meeting in New Orleans. The winner need not be present. Donate now.

    Some say the French Quarter begins at the luxurious Hotel Monteleone. So, too, will the 2016 ACHE Annual Conference and Meeting. Located at the foot of Royal Street, the luxury hotel boasts a one-of-a-kind carousel bar, a heated rooftop pool, and a full-service day spa.     About the Hotel Monteleone

    Like the world-famous French Quarter in which is located, Hotel Monteleone has a rich history of its own. Since 1886, Hotel Monteleone has stood proudly as one of the first landmarks in the French Quarter. Today, it is a member of Historic Hotels of America – and for good reason!

    The hotel is one of the last great family-owned-and-operated hotels in the city, remaining in the Monteleone family for the five generations since its opening. Through its many expansions, the hotel has been a favorite haunt of distinguished authors like Ernest Hemingway, Tennessee Williams, and William Faulkner, as well as contemporary greats like Anne Rice and John Grisham. In 1999, it was designated an official literary landmark by the Friends of the Library Association and became one of only three hotels in the U.S. to share this honor.

    In addition to its rich literary tradition, the hotel is said it be haunted by its history. Generations of hotel guests and staff claim to have witnessed haunted events, and the hotel is known for being one of the premier haunted hotels in New Orleans.

    Preparations for the ACHE 2016 Annual Meeting & Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana are in high gear. The list of keynote speakers has been finalized, the schedule has been published, and ACHE attendees across the U.S. are booking their stay at the historic Hotel Monteleone. There are many behind-the-scenes volunteers who help make all of this happen. From the conference planning committee to on-site coordination, the annual meeting and conference truly could not be as exceptional an event as it is without our extraordinary colleagues and friends. To help put the finishing touches on this event, however, we are calling on our member volunteers and asking for your help.  

    How You Can Help

    The 2016 Annual Meeting & Conference will run October 17-19. We are currently seeking volunteers to donate a bit of their time during the conference in one of two ways:

    Session Presider (2 hours)

    Session presiders are present during an assigned concurrent or roundtable session. They introduce speakers, coordinate session evaluations, and help keep session speakers on time. If you choose to volunteer to be a session presider, you will be asked to preside at one of the sessions during the conference.

     On-Site Registration Table Volunteer (2-4 hours)

    The registration/information table at the annual conference is staffed during all open hours of the conference, so someone must always be there. It’s a big job, and we need your help! Registration table volunteers will be asked to give between 2-4 hours of their time to assist our home office staff and planning committee volunteers.
