Five Minutes with ACHE
November/December, 2011

Greetings!
I hope you were able to attend our Annual Conference & Meeting at the Hilton Bonnet Creek in Orlando, Florida. If you did, I know that you will agree with me that we had an outstanding experience as we explored "Sustainable Leadership: Bold Thinking about Who We Are." We owe a sincere vote of thanks (and our resounding commendation) to President Tish Szymurski, her Program Committee--co-chaired by Clare Roby and Jeffery Alejandro--and everyone else on the Orlando 2011 team for an intellectually stimulating, consciousness-raising array of plenary presentations and concurrent sessions that truly did cause us to think boldly about who we are.
The number of individuals, corporations, agencies, and institutions who were actively involved in this year's conference is gratifying. Almost 30 exhibitors along with representatives from almost 25 educational institutions and organizations were directly involved in the Orlando Conference & Meeting as sponsors, committee members, presenters, presiders, and in many more roles. The home office staff worked diligently and tirelessly (behind the scenes in many cases) to make this conference an overall success. Anyone who has been involved in any way with this or any other annual conference knows how essential this highly committed, intensely active participation is to the overall success of the event. So, a big, heartfelt "Thank You" once again to everyone involved. Tish, you and your conference crew have raised the bar considerably for those planning the Association's annual conferences in the future; well done!
A big part of our annual conference is to recognize the achievements of our individual and institutional members. It's truly exciting to learn about the individual efforts and quality programming that goes on throughout the country. So, congratulations to all those award-winning individuals and institutions represented in Orlando. You have inspired and challenged the rest of us as well.
One of the duties (I prefer to say "privileges") of the ACHE President during his or her term of office is to visit each of the regional conferences as they occur across the nation. There is no doubt that I am very much looking forward to making these visits in 2012. It has been my very good fortune to work in two different ACHE regions during my career. I spent almost 8 years working in what was then designated Region 8 (now ACHE's Great Plains region) at Southeastern Oklahoma State University before moving to Kentucky (South region) in 2008. It has always been very clear to me that each of these regions has its own character or ambience and that each is distinctly different from the other (and no, I don't have a favorite--I feel absolutely at home whether I'm in Great Plains or the South). I suspect that the same is true for all our regions--that each has its very own identity and that each of us would find like-minded colleagues and fulfilling professional relationships in any of them; that's just the nature of our Association. Hopefully, you'll forgive me for throwing in a little plug, but I was particularly excited to learn of the plans for the upcoming South Region conference that were mentioned during our regional business meeting. The conference, scheduled for April 23--25, 2012, in Lexington, KY, promises to offer a fine program right here in my hometown. Not so coincidentally, I think, this will take place during the spring season at Keeneland Racecourse, one of the premier Thoroughbred racing venues in the country. I have it on reliable inside information that we're planning a trip to the track as an optional activity, so you won't want to miss this one regardless of your home region. Mark that calendar!
In my remarks as incoming President, I mentioned our theme for the coming year, "Collaboration and Partnership: Our keys to the Future." I sincerely believe that we must seek mutually advantageous relationships both within our respective units and on a statewide, regional, or national association basis to be able to thrive in these trying times. In future Five Minutes columns, I will be reporting on specific activities and events that reveal definite progress in forming collaborations and partnerships in different places.
My goal for 2012 is to leave ACHE even stronger, more effective, and more influential--both internally and externally--than it is now. With that in mind, I know that any association such as ours is only as strong and effective as its members want it to be. So, I urge you to get involved--locally, whether that's within your state or region (or both), nationally, or internationally.
By the way, it's not too soon to begin thinking about our next year, so I'll close by mentioning some important dates for the 2012 Annual Conference & Meeting:
- March 2, 2012--Deadline, Call for Proposals
- November 12--14, 2012--Annual Conference and Meeting in Austin, TX
- Watch for the Conference Website to come online soon
Let's make this a terrific year!
Charles Hickox

Back to basics
In addition to working for ACHE, your home office staff, Ynez and Rebekah, are both graduate students at the University of Oklahoma. Their coursework gives both of them the opportunity to increasingly expand their skill sets and knowledge base. It also means they are adult learners, and epitomize the student population that ACHE members serve every day. As we move into 2012, a great deal of thought has recently been going into how ACHE can best serve its members so that they can continue to serve adult students like your dedicated home office staff as effectively as possible.
In 1992, the Missions and Goals for ACHE were adopted. In 1997, we become “The Network of Leaders for Lifelong Learning.” Underlying every piece of documentation that defines ACHE is the term “network.” We exist to connect you to each other in order to support your activities as leaders in the field of adult continuing education. Overheard at our recent Annual Conference & Meeting at our inaugural Young Professionals reception was the statement, “My ACHE connections are where I go when I need to find something out.”
We will shortly be asking all ACHE members to confirm that their profiles are current and correct. We will be adding a new field to your member profile that will allow you to indicate your areas of specialty. This will allow yet another way to network with your peers and connect with others when you need to find something out, so please include this information when you update your member information.
Thanks!
Ynez Walske and Rebekah Law

Grants & Scholarships awarded in support of research and scholarship in continuing education
During General Session III at ACHE’s 2011 Annual Conference & Meeting, the recipients of the 2011 Alex Charters Research Grant and the 2011 Wayne Whelan Scholarship were announced.
2011 Alex Charters Research Grant
The 2011 Alex Charters Research Grant was awarded to Carolyn McKnight, Director of the UCM Summit Center at the University of Central Missouri. The Alex Charters Research Grant is given each year in an effort to promote the development and dissemination of new knowledge, theories, and practices in adult and continuing education. ACHE members or doctoral students with sponsorship from ACHE are eligible to submit research grant proposals. McKnight’s proposal, detailing her study on invitational leadership, was found to be both innovative and interesting. ACHE is pleased to award her with this year’s grant to further her work. In selecting McKnight as the grant recipient, the Research Committee noted:
“This project has potential for a high degree of utility and impact given the number of off-campus extension sites that many colleges and universities have. Studying invitational leadership is original and innovative, and her methodology is sound. The project applies directly to the field of adult education and continuing education administration and offers a new focus. We find it an exciting and interesting approach.”
2011 Wayne L. Whelan Scholarship
Joe Nairn, who serves as Executive Assistant to the President at Finger Lakes Community College, was awarded the 2011 Wayne Whelan Scholarship. The Wayne Whelan Scholarship is given annually to an ACHE member engaged in graduate studies on either a full-time or part-time basis. Nairn will be utilizing his scholarship to continue his Doctor of Management in Community College Policy and Administration at University of Maryland-University College.
Find out more information about ACHE grants and scholarships by visiting our Grants & Scholarships page or by contacting the ACHE home office atadmin@acheinc.org or at 800-807-2243.

The MidAtlantic Region of ACHE recently collaborated with the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) Eastern PA drive-in conference on “Understanding and Addressing the Needs of Adult Learners.” Jackie Martin of Neumann University and ACHE MidAtlantic Pennsylvania state representative served on the NACADA Eastern PA planning committee under the direction of Dr. Joanne Conlon of West Chester University of Pennsylvania, who is the Eastern PA Representative to NACADA. ACHE MidAtlantic colleagues shared their expertise throughout the program. Notably, Dr. James Broomall of the University of Delaware presented a keynote address on the history and rise of the adult learner; Dr. Stephen Gambescia of Drexel University presented a roundtable discussion on assisting adult students on academic probation; TinaMarie Coolidge of Drexel University and Jackie Martin of Neumann University presented a roundtable on designing orientation programs for adult learners. The conference was held at Lehigh Carbon Community College, PA. It was a good experience and opportunity to connect and collaborate among ACHE and NACADA colleagues. |

C AUCE Webinars
Each year, the CAUCE Professional Development Committee hosts a series of webinars featuring speakers from the university community. CAUCE would like to invite ACHE members to participate. This year’s series focuses on “creating community” – in our workplaces and learning environments, and through our marketing efforts.
Creating Community in Online Learning Environments: Ideas and Examples That Have Worked
Date: Tuesday, November 22, 2011 Time: 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm EST
Registration Deadline: 11:00 a.m. EST, Monday, November 21, 2011
Description: Online communities are everywhere! Just look at the success of Facebook and you will get a sense of what online communities can be. But what makes an online learning community effective? How can we design, facilitate and foster effective teaching practice and deeper learning through the use of online learning communities? How can we measure success? In this interactive webinar, the presenters will explore these questions and "deconstruct" some examples of virtual learning communities designed for online courses at the University of Waterloo. The session will be of interest to anyone concerned with online student engagement. Feel free to bring your own ideas and examples to share with the group.
Presenters: Rudy Peariso and Dina Meunier, Online Learning Consultants, Centre for Extended Learning, University of Waterloo.

Adapting Teaching Methods to Diverse Communities
Date: Tuesday, February 21, 2012 Time: 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm EST
Registration Deadline: 11:00 a.m. EST, Friday, February 17, 2012
Please note the CAUCE office is closed Monday, February 20th for Family Day in SK.
Description: There are numerous paths to learning and a wide range of teaching methods to follow those paths. Some adults learn a great deal on their own through readings, observations and Internet research. For others, learning is inhibited when teaching methods rely on abilities not yet fully mastered or when variables such as life experiences, academic backgrounds and family situations are not considered. In this webinar, the presenter will discuss various teaching methods and learning strategies that can help optimize educational outcomes in a classroom of diverse adult learners, and will identify the roles of educators throughout the process.
Presenter: Kevin Parent, Faculty Lecturer, Program Coordinator – Accounting, Finance and Taxation, McGill University.

Registration Deadline: 11:00 a.m. EDT, Monday, March 19, 2012

Join this webinar to hear from colleagues in two different continuing education units who recently re-examined each of their marketing efforts with this question in mind. Learn about their unique journeys to unite diverse program units behind a single CE brand to work towards achieving a stronger, more cohesive presence in the community.
