Five Minutes with ACHE
November/December 2010

|
Here we go…Column Number One! There’s much to do and I so look forward to future opportunities together. As a prelude to 2011, I share with you special features in our communications, attempt a short list of goals for the coming year, and first and foremost extend thanks and well-wishes to many.
‘Tis the season for celebration. I trust that I am not alone in asking, “Where did this past year go?” I have no doubt that time was spent on anything and everything, from vacations to program reviews, from family celebrations to institutional events. For all of us in ACHE, an important time of our year went to Roxanne Gonzales who, as President, led our Association with critical dialogue, nationwide visits and contagious excitement about the 2010 Annual Meeting and Conference. With great pleasure, I begin this first column with a special thanks to Roxanne for her leadership throughout 2010 and for such a warm and personal welcome to Albuquerque. This conference mirrored the who we are in so many ways with great depth and inspiration.
Congratulations to Roxanne, Roger MacLean, Marthann Schulte and the entire conference planning team for delivering a rich program of speakers, topics and venues focused on our National Agenda. The conference had creative venues that we will carry into future years. Our time in New Mexico was also made possible by our home office team of Jim Pappas, Ynez Walske, Rebekah Law, Julie Tate and their outstanding Oklahoma colleagues who remained tirelessly supportive! Equally so, exhibitors and special guests enabled us to remain current in our practices and aware of the latest tools to enhance our effectiveness.
Warm wishes and congratulations to Dr. Alex Charters and to all who received awards and recognition. Personal and professional stories such as theirs illustrate our strong network of colleagueship and our leadership in continuing higher education. To those who participated in our conference for the first time, thank you for being with us. I hope you were inspired, and I look forward to seeing you again...and again...and again.
With hope of seeing everyone again, I envision 2011 as a seamless bridge between years past and the themes I know will be highlighted through 2013. We will maintain a focus on our national agenda while continuing to develop partnerships that will help sustain us as an organization and as individuals in our respective institutional roles. Significant work on our national agenda began in New Mexico. “Bold thinking” this coming year will not allow this focus to be lost.
This year, we will also update our Strategic Plan with a short list of viable goals for the coming year. We'll identify new ways of working through new collaborative opportunities, such as fundraising and sponsorships, and invite others from outside our association to consider creative partnership roles. Much of this work will be accomplished by small groups and committees. Five Minutes will keep you informed of progress as this work unfolds.
Leading up to the 2011 Annual Conference and Meeting in Orlando, Florida, Five Minutes will feature Welcome New Members -- a spotlight on new members to ACHE, sharing their backgrounds and thoughts on finding their way to us; My Mentor -- personal reflections from our members about professional inspiration in their lives; and a special Check this Out section focused on an article, blog, book, film, etc. related to the 2011 theme: Sustainable Leadership: Bold Thinking about Who We Are. I also encourage you to please share your own best practices and personal stories through a submission to Five Minutes. In addition to the above features, the newsletter will continue to highlight The Learning Corner and Regional News with the latest from across the country. I look forward to hearing from you!
Our 2011 Annual Conference and Meeting in Orlando, Florida will be a perfect place to hear from you and to think differently about ourselves. There, in a mecca of creativity, perhaps our imaginations can wander, as we think boldly about our future and how we will sustain ourselves. Much more about Orlando is forthcoming. For now, please consider submitting a Proposal for 2011 and check out our website in coming weeks as we post more information about the both the national and regional conferences.
I end this note as I began, with special thanks to my Home Team at Neumann -- Debbie, Jackie, Sam, Janet, Judy, Bill, Allison and Jil for their ongoing support, every day.
Have a wonderful and safe holiday season,
Gratefully,
Tish

Five of the eight ACHE regions have already announced their spring conferences and ask you to Save the Date!

Welcome New Members
We will be taking some time in each edition of Five Minutes during the upcoming year to profile ACHE members who joined the association during the last year. We're excited to learn a little bit about these new faces and hope you will be as well.
Name: Fay Roseman, Ph.D.
Title: Assistant Professor; Director of Internship
Institution/Organization: Barry University, Miami Shores, Florida
Personal/Professional Interests: Personal and professional growth and development of adult learners; human growth & development; human diversity
Areas of Responsibility: Teacher certification; pre-service teacher preparation; fostering relationships between the University and district/school personnel
Thoughts on ACHE: The October 2010 conference was my first experience with ACHE and I was very impressed with the content of the sessions, the commitment of the presenters and the welcoming atmosphere of the conference organizers and participants. Sharing ideas with other participants confirmed for me that education of adults (both in traditional programs and in non-traditional programs) is changing and we must all work together to meet the needs of our students. I am involved with undergraduates entering traditional education and work directly with those who are completing their degree program. Although we have students who are coming to college from high school, our program also services students who are more mature, have families and have been in the workforce. Bringing these learners together requires a committed faculty and an understanding of the demands of both groups of students. I hope to become more involved with ACHE and help bridge the gap that exists between our roles and our service to our students.
Making an Impact
In what will hopefully become a frequent column in The Learning Corner, this month's Making an Impact focuses on Regeneration Writers Press, a unique project for and by nontraditional students at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, and one of their most recent accomplishments.
Regeneration Writers Press is a teaching/learning press established by nontraditional students of writing at Mercer University to engage students, alumni, faculty, and the Mercer community in the development of greater writing skills. Editors assess the regenerative power of works they select, choosing to represent diverse writers at various stages of expertise. Students use these and other ventures to learn writing, editing, marketing, and publishing skills. Chico, The Polar Bear is the second book published by the Press.

Chico, The Polar Bear, a delightful children’s book by nontraditional student Yvonne Maria Gabriel, a Liberal Studies major in the College of Continuing and Professional Studies at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, was recently published by Regeneration Writers Press. Terry M. Sowell, an English teacher at Stratford Academy in Macon wrote:
Yvonne’s beautiful illustrations draw your attention to the story of Chico, The Polar Bear. Having taught elementary school for over twenty years, I could immediately see how my students could feel the connection between the illustrator and her words. As the story is unveiled, the reader can find comfort in taking risks and eventually realizing the comfort of one’s own skin. Children easily relate to stories with animals, especially those with human characteristics. This is a story where I could implement multiple extension activities for my students, especially in the areas of writing and character education. Chico provides them with a true vicarious experience.
Four-year old Madeleine Thorne from New Orleans exuberantly confided to her father: “I love Chico. He is my new best friend. I want to ride on his back and do circus tricks with him. I love animal stories.”
The first book published by the Press, Regeneration! A Journal of Creative Writing, was published in January 2010. Regeneration! is a divine compilation of poetry, essays, stories, and vignettes together with illustrative art work and photographs, all created by Mercer students, alumni, and faculty. Regeneration Two will include works from the Macon community. Books in progress include Regeneration Two, Stinsonville (a black neighborhood in Macon), and Yamashita (the Japanese general in WW II who was executed for war crimes).
Chico and Regeneration! are both available at holiday prices ($15 and $10, respectively) through Amazon.com, regenerationpress.com, or directly from the editor at eskew_mh@mercer.edu. Both books bring joy and delight into the lives of readers.
