Dr. Roger Maclean, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville“Accept challenges, so that you may feel the exhilaration of victory.” – George S. Patton

In the field of continuing education, there is never a shortage of challenges.  Whether you are building a brand new program, sustaining an existing program, marketing for particular populations, serving non-traditional students or working with a tight budget, challenges and continuing education seem to be constant companions.  But, many of us also do our best work within a trying environment.

The ACHE 2010 Annual Conference and Meeting in Albuquerque, New Mexico will be a place to share our victories…be they past, current or future.  We hope that you will join us for three days of valuable conference proceedings.

2010 ACHE President Roxanne Gonzales’ annual conference theme, “Continuing education – Reflecting upon and responding to the national agenda”, encapsulates the challenges we are all experiencing in our spheres.  We should reflect, but we must also respond.   Tapping into the talented membership of several ACHE regions, the Conference Planning Committee has created a conference that provides attendees with tools and skills to navigate current and future challenges in continuing higher education.  Whether it is the national agenda or local needs, continuing education will meet these needs.

Federal requirements and economic crises are being experienced by all realms of education.  The 2010 Conference Program includes keynote speakers that will help attendees analyze and react to our changing national agenda.  Workshops will be a highlight of the program.  The Conference Planning Committee has solicited feedback from our ACHE membership so that the workshops are current, relevant, and filled with useful takeaways for you and your continuing education stakeholders.  Workshop leaders are experts in their fields who have a passion for learning and a special acuity for reaching adult populations.  Other learning/sharing/networking opportunities include a fantastic cadre of higher education exhibitors, concurrent sessions presented by our scholarly colleagues, topical roundtables, and an awards luncheon to acknowledge stellar work of member institutions and peers.

All conference attendees will enjoy the opening reception at Casa Esencia, one of New Mexico’s most historic buildings and a landmark with the National Register of Historic Places since 1976; an opening blessing dance from Native American dancers; flamenco dancers; and a talented mariachi band!  Naturally, the ACHE staples of ‘eat, drink and be merry’ will beckon you to spend time with your colleagues in the relaxing high desert environment of Albuquerque.

And, you may also wish to extend your visit in enchanting New Mexico to experience the gorgeous vistas, unique local faire, and renewing spirit of the American southwest.  Our conference hotel, the Hotel Albuquerque, is located in the middle of Old Town Albuquerque.  Hotel Albuquerque embraces the flavor of New Mexico with beautiful outdoor areas and a convention space that will be the exclusive use of ACHE during the conference.  Old Town is home to myriad shops and artisans that embody New Mexico’s eclecticism.  Also located in Old Town are museums and restaurants for every interest and taste.  The cuisine of New Mexico can be as spicy as you wish, yet accommodating to every palette.  Let the wide spaces and majestic desert landscape help you clear your mind and invigorate your spirit.

So, as the opening quotation expresses; accept your continuing education challenges via the ACHE 2010 Annual Conference and Meeting in Albuquerque.  An exhilarating victory awaits!
