"Moving Forward with the National Agenda"
The symposium, moderated by Eduventure’s Richard Garrett, will consist of a panel of continuing education organization leaders from the United States and Canada. The theme will focus on future trends in continuing education and serving adult learners to meet the new national agenda where working adults must continuously improve their skills to advance and remain competitive in the workplace. Mr. Garrett will provide compiled institutional data based on recent research pertaining to the topic of continuing education and future trends. The panel members will provide their perspectives and will dialog with the conference participants.

Richard Garrett is the Managing Director overseeing Eduventures’ Learning Collaborative programs in Online Higher Education and Continuing & Professional Education, serving hundreds of senior higher administrators across the U.S. Prior to joining Eduventures, Richard was widely regarded as one of Europe's foremost online higher education experts and served as the Deputy Director of the Observatory on Borderless Higher Education in the United Kingdom, a position he held from 2001 to 2005. |
His research and consulting work has focused on higher education trends worldwide, particularly online learning, adult learners, internationalization, and commercial activity. Among recent publications is E-learning in Tertiary Education - Where Do We Stand?, a book commissioned by the OECD, Paris. Richard has also has served as a researcher in the School of Education, University of Surrey, and at the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (U.K.).
Maureen MacDonald, Panel Member

Maureen MacDonald is the Dean, Division of Continuing Studies at the University of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada, a position she has held since January, 2008. Maureen has worked in higher education for 17 years in leadership, management, operational and teaching roles and has lead the development and delivery of a wide range of educational programming across industries, student groups and instructional formats. Currently, Maureen is the President of the Canadian Association for University Continuing Education. Earlier in her career, Maureen was a management consultant with KPMG and she practiced law for several years.

Maureen has a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Manitoba, a Master of Business Administration from McGill University, and a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from the University of North Dakota. She is also a Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP), a lifelong learner, a novice golfer, and a periodic runner of marathons!
James Selbe, Panel Member

As assistant vice president, lifelong learning, Jim Selbe oversees the Center for Lifelong Learning to include Military and Corporate Programs. The Center promotes access to higher education for military service members, veterans, and working adults through the evaluation of post-secondary learning acquired through formal military training and occupational experiences, workforce training, apprentice programs, and professional certifications. In addition to these activities, Selbe leads the ACE’s Serving Those Who Serve initiative focused on access and success for returning veterans; oversight of three transcript registries holding more than seven million adult learner records; and the planning and management of lifelong learning initiatives as they relate to working adults and military personnel. |
Selbe is a frequent speaker at national and state conferences, addressing topics that include the evaluation of educational experiences that occur outside of the traditional classroom, non-traditional academic transcripts and transfer of academic credit for the mobile student, and lifelong learning trends and innovative practice. Prior to joining ACE, he served 20 years on active duty with the U.S. Marine Corps and held positions of academic advisor, adjunct faculty, and administrative faculty at Old Dominion University and Central Texas College.
Robert Hansen, Panel Member

Robert J. Hansen is Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of the University Professional & Continuing Education Association. Prior to his appointment at UPCEA, Hansen served as Associate Provost for University Outreach at USM, a regional public university serving 10,000 students. He previously spent six years at Saint Xavier University of Chicago, as Assistant to the President and Secretary of the Corporation, and then as founding Executive Director of Orland Park Campus and Off-Campus Programs. Before that, Hansen served two years in the administration of former Illinois governor, Jim Edgar. |
Hansen earned a B.S. in Psychology from the University of Illinois, an M.A. in English Language and Literature from the University of Michigan, and a Ph.D. in English from the University of Notre Dame.
Catherine Hansman, Panel Member

Catherine A. Hansman is Professor of Adult Learning and Development (ALD) at Cleveland State University and directs the graduate programs there in Adult Learning and Development. . She is a 2000-2002 Cyril O. Houle Emerging Scholars in Adult and Continuing Education Scholarship recipient and in 2005 was awarded a Distinguished Faculty Award for Research by Cleveland State University. Dr. Hansman is past chair of the Commission of Professors of Adult Education (CPAE) and is currently President of the American Association for Adult and Continuing Education (AAACE). |
Her research interests include adult learners in higher education, low-income adult learners, mentoring, communities of practice in higher education and workplace contexts, and issues of diversity. Her research interests are reflected in the two books she has edited, Understanding and Negotiating the Political Landscape of Adult Education (with Peggy Sissel), and Critical Perspectives on Mentoring: Trends and Issues, and in the invited book chapters and articles published in various journals, such as Adult Education Quarterly, Adult Learning, Journal of Adult Basic Education, Community College Review, and the Journal of Excellence on College Teaching.
