What to see and do in and around Philadelphia

There's so much to see and do within a two-hour car or train ride from Philadelphia. Here are just a few ideas:

In Philadelphia:

The location of our conference and meeting, the Sheraton Society Hill, sits adjacent to the Independence Hall National Historic Park, home to Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, the National Constitution Center and dozens of other historic buildings and museums. The hotel is just a short distance from Penn's Landing, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Adventure Aquarium, professional sports venues and a wealth of other exciting places to see and things to do.

Visit www.ushistory.org, a site hosted by the Independence Hall Association in Philadelphia, for extensive details on historic Philadelphia, including places to see, eat, shop and more.

Liberty Bell

When I travel, it's all about the food. Check out these notable places to eat:

City Tavern

"When John Adams arrived in Philadelphia in August of 1774, to attend the First Continental Congress, he was greeted by leading citizens and immediately taken to the tavern he would call "the most genteel tavern in America." The tavern Adams referred to, City Tavern, was not yet a year old and was already caught in momentous events. A few months earlier, Paul Revere had ridden up to the Tavern with the news of the closing of the port of Boston by the British Government."

From Chef Walter Staib: "City Tavern's primary mission is to interpret and deliver the culinary experience inspired by the customs and food of 18th Century Colonial America."

How about a Philly Cheesesteak?

One of the more infamous rivalries in Philadelphia is that between Pat's King of Steaks and Geno's Steaks, the two most well-known purveyors of that Philadelphia institution, the Philly Cheesesteak.

Morimoto

You may recognize the name "Morimoto" if you've ever watched Iron Chef America on the Food Network. Chef Masaharu Morimoto is one of the acclaimed "Iron Chefs" on the program.

"Chef Masaharu Morimoto, who has earned international respect for his extraordinary cuisine, integrates Western ingredients and techniques with traditional Japanese cooking such as tempura, sushi, sashimi and yakimono. A selection of private label sakes compliments Chef Morimoto's sophisticated menu."

All within an hour of Philly...

Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and Pennsylvania Dutch Country

From the Lancaster County Convention and Visitors Bureau: "While you're here, there's so much to experience - from downtown markets and galleries to family fun attractions to the historic streets of towns and villages. Break out your map to see it all, and check out our themed sample itineraries to get you started. But, we also invite you to get lost - literally. It's the best way to explore the fantastic countryside  we share with our Amish neighbors."

Chester County, Pennsylvania/Wilmington, Delaware and The Brandywine Valley

Located midway between New York City and Washington, D.C., and just 30 minutes south of Center City Philadelphia, Chester County and Wilmington, Delaware, are your gateway to The Brandywine Valley. "Discover breath-taking gardens, fabulous mansions, unique museums, a wide selection of performing arts, charming wineries, numerous festivals and historic towns that retain their 17th- and 18th-century ambience or simply relax and enjoy our excellent restaurants and hotels."

Brandywine Battlefield reenactment"The Brandywine Valley is a magical place where many have been inspired. Chester County is home to Longwood Gardens, the inspiration of Pierre S. du Pont. Other du Pont treasures: Hagley, Neumours and Winterthur also grace our countryside. Three generations of the famed artistic Wyeth family were inspired by the region and the Brandywine River Museum houses the work of N.C., Andrew and Jamie Wyeth among other American artists. Media giant QVC is headquartered in Chester County, producing 24-hour broadcasts and offering behind-the-scenes studio tours. Local wineries have flourished and the Brandywine Valley Wine Trail features tours, tastings, special events and more. The Brandywine Battlefield Historic Site is another site steeped in history. And that's only half the story!"

For details about lots to see and do in this historic area, visit the Chester County Conference and Visitors Bureau Web site.
