Chris DoughertyWelcome to a new academic year!  So far, 2008 has included a number of critical developments in continuing and higher education.  The passage of the 21st Century G.I. Bill, an invigorated focus on the effective transfer of credit between institutions, the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act, and economic challenges that have been manifested in many state budgets all constitute significant dynamics that have marked the past year.  These certainly are interesting times for those of us in ACHE, ones that offer significant opportunities to assist our institutions as they negotiate some of the challenges presented by limited resources and significant imperatives to provide access to learners across multiple generations. ACHE globeA new school year is upon us, and with it comes the usual “headaches” we associate with the return of hundreds and sometimes thousands of students to our campuses: decreased availability of parking, extended wait time for e-mail responses from colleagues, longer lines at the student union coffee shop, longer wait times for everything in general. It is with great sadness that we share with you the news of the death of a past president of our association.  Dr. Clarence “Tommy” Thompson served as ACHE president in 1970.  His daughter Barbara contacted our office recently to let us know about his passing.  “The association meant so much to him,” she said.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to Dr. Thompson’s family and friends. From the Gainesville Sun:  “Major Clarence H. "Tommy" Thompson passed away on June 9, 2008, at the age of 95.   Read more..

Call for Manuscripts for Winter 2009 Edition

The Journal of Continuing Higher Education (JCHE) announces a Call for Manuscripts.  For best consideration for the Winter 2009 issue, manuscripts are requested by September 30.  JCHE strives to support continuing higher education by serving as a forum for the reporting and exchange of information based on research, observations, and the experience relevant to the field.  Issues are published in the winter, spring, and fall.
